I have tested the Samsung Wave on our university's Exchange Server setup, and I am afraid there are a number of issues... It is a pity, because the phone is otherwise so good!

I started of with firmware S8500XXJF1, and subsequently upgraded to S8500XXJG5, and the problems listed is still present on this latest firmware, except for one issue that has been resolved.

The issues as follows:
1. General Activesync Issues:
  • BUG: Push e-mail unreliable – it sometimes stops updating e-mails during the day.
  • BUG: The phone sometimes reboots on its own, without warning. While this may not be an Activesync issue, I believe it is related, because it often happens when there is a lengthy sync, and you then decide to cancel the sync.
  • BUG: If you have more than one Activesync account, the second Activesync account sometimes stops working, and you then need to delete the account and recreate it, to get it working again. (I believe that later firmware fixed this - it was present in XXJF1, but XXJAG5 has not yet displayed this problem.
2. E-mail Issues:
  • MISSING FEATURE: Cannot flag e-mail messages for later action . This is standard functionality on other Active Sync implemtations, and is very useful, because when you are on the road, and receive a message that you cannot attend to, you can flag it for actionm and when you get back to your PC, you can then look at all flagged e-mails.

3. Calendar Issues:
  • BUG: Exceptions on Repetitive Calendar entries not handled correctly – for example, if you have a weekly meeting on a Tuesday, but need to change the time for one of the meetings, this exception is not synchronised correctly back to the phone. It also does not seem possible to specify an exception for repetitive meetings on the phone.
  • BUG: When an occurrence of a repetitive meeting is deleted on Exchange Server, a condition appears where multiple duplicates of the meeting is then created on every recurrence on the Echange Server by the phone, with weirdly, availability of each set as "Free"
  • BUG: Repetitive meetings are sometimes displayed at weird times – I cannot determine a pattern yet, but a repetitive weekly appointment that was cancelled, on a Thursday, now suddenly sows up on a Wednesday on the phone, and not at all on the Exchange Server.
BUG: Calendar entries are sometimes not synced at all.
  • MISSING FEATURE: When a new calendar entry is specified, it defaults to the phone’s internal calendar, and is not synced back to the Exchange Server. One need to remember to specify the Exchange server calendar when a new entry is entered, and it does not seem possible to change this default behaviour.
  • BUG: When an invitation is received, and you accept the invitation, it is sometimes not entered in the calendar, and as a consequence, it is lost, because the acceptance e-mail then also disappears.
4. Contacts Issues
  • BUG: Birthdays for contacts are not synchronised to the phone correctly – if a contact’s birthday is say 3 October on the Exchange Server, it is displayed as 2 October on the phone. Timezones are set up correctly on the phone, because the calendar syncs correctly for other meetings. (I am in GMT+2)
  • MISSING FEATURE: It is not possible to tell the phone to save new contacts that are created via the phone by default to the Exchange Server.
5. Tasks Issues:
  • MISSING FEATURE: It is not possible to tell the phone to save new tasks by default to the Exchange Server.
I will appreciate if other all report back, so that we can see if these issues are limited to certain setups?

OK, cschutte has gone to a lot of trouble to test and write this so lets see if you can't help with this by:

A. confirming that one, some, all of these problems happens with your Wave - don't forget to put which and the firmware number.

B. state that you don't have these problems - state firmware and also which program you haven't tested because you don't use it i.e. Push e-mail.

C. you know a workaround for any of these problems - state firmware.

Thanks for posting this and for helping with this, as I'm sure you nice people will.  Wink

hello there,
that's a very good list, should be a hard work.
so I (with an XXJF4 firmware) confirm the following:
1.a
3.a

I also had problems with (outlook vs google with googlesync) calendar items with changed time.

I will try turning off push email, changing it to a very frequent interval, maybe it's better. Today I had a few new emails in gmail, but I didnt get them to the phone (manual synchronizing didn't help either). As I remember, I did something (turned on wifi whilst sync using 3G?) during sync, and maybe this was too much.

I think these 2 problems are relevant issues, I am surprised that there are just a few posts on it.

Go to Settings and click the email icon. You should have 6 folders in total.

I meant besides the default folders. Anyway, i just found the way to view them: In the email account, there is a little arrow in the right side, click the arrow and it will expand the folders you have inside your inbox.

But yet, still exists a problem, every time a server rule moves one message from your inbox to one of its subfolders, you do not receive a new message warning.

GOOGLE ACCOUNT:

I set up my Gmail account with Exchange ActiveSYnc a week back and it was working fine.

Yesterday, it stopped working, so i had to unlock the Captcha again and i reconfigured my gmail account by adding a "Google" account instead of the ACtive Sync.

I have a strange problem now....
when i was using active sync, i used to get notifications for only new emails in my inbox. But with the Google account, i'm getting 2-3 month old emails also....my phone is forever downloading older and older emails....

PLEASE someone let me know how do i stop it from downloading old emails....i wish to get emails only for the past 1 day or so...

Is there some setting that i haven't propoerly configured?

look forward to your help guys!

Thanks in advance...

Go to my account --> tap Exchange ActiveSync --> Tap on Email sync, it will bring up a menu on your date range (All; Past 1 day; Past 3 days; Past 1 weeks; etc), click on the date range you want, tap Set.
It should limit your email download.
