Hi all,

I was pointed to this interesting site: www.visonmobile.com/blog/
They have published a 4 part series on this topic:
"Mobile Developers Economics 2010" and have given quite a good insight and analysis of the world of mobile developers. You can download a free copy of their report there.

I will just post some interesting excerpt here to stir some interest and thoughts.
Firstly I must credit visonmobile for doing such a amazing thorough analysis and for the writers insightful articles. Here are the 4 part header and their author:

Part 1: The migration of developer mindshare -- -   Andreas Constantinou
Part 2: Taking Application to Market -- -   Andreas Constantinou
Part 3: The building blocks of Mobile Applications
           -  Tor Björn
           Head of Ericsson Lab
Part 4: The Role of Networks in a Developers World
          - James Parton
          Head of Telefonica Developer Communities

Part 1: paraphrase
" How do developer choose which OS to develop their Apps?
Here are the top 4 reasons:
Large Market Penetration   75%
Revenue Potential (Direct or vis advertising) 55%
Has Apps Store  40%
Large Developers community 35%"

Interesting read indeed.
I will post more over the next few days.

"The recent Apple vs Adobe rift and the subsequent banning of Flash from all iProducts has only weakened Adobe’s position. In parallel Sun has launched half-hearted attempts at reducing fragmentation, the number one Java ME pain point, while the Oracle take over is only worsening the problem."

Now for those of us who has been questioning why the paid apps only appear at certain country, following may be an interesting read:

"Part 2: Taking Application to the market

Challenge 3. Dubious long-tail economics

Only five percent of the respondents reported very good revenues, above their expectations, while 24 percent said their revenues were poor.

There are also platform-specific effects: the unpredictability of revenues, in the case of the Apple’s pick-and-choose culture for featured apps; and, the limitations of paid app support for Android, where paid applications are only available to users in 13 countries out of 46 countries where Android Market is available, as of June 2010."

Next excerpt is for those who has been questioning the quality of the Apps in Samsung store, it will show you that this issue applied pretty much to Android market too.

" Still at Part 2, challenge 3:

In addition, the applications that are published on Android market are not curated by Google, resulting in 100s of applications that are low quality or are infringing copyright, thereby making it harder for quality, paid apps to make money. Even in economically healthier ecosystems like Apple’s App Store, a standalone developer can hope to sell in total an average of 1,000-2,000 copies of an application at an average price of $1.99, which is barely justifying the many man- months of effort that it takes to develop a mobile application by today’s standards."
