Samsung has announced its plans to merge its homegrown smartphone OS - Bada - with the Linux-based Tizen, which was recently created in collaboration with Intel.

Launched back in 2010, Bada was meant to feature on Samsung's low-end touchscreen phones. Compared to the feature phone OS found on these phones, Bada was much better because it had an improved user interface and smartphone features such as proper multitasking and native third party application installation through Samsung's own application store.

Now, however, with Samsung starting work on Tizen, it makes little sense to keep both the operating systems existing simultaneously. Then there is also the fact that Samsung has Android and Windows Phone devices as well.

So starting this year, Bada will be merged into Tizen and as such, will cease to exist on its own, outside of the devices that are currently running it. Samsung has said that the current Bada applications and the SDK will be backward compatible with the new OS. No mention of whether the current devices will be upgraded to Tizen, although we wouldn't hold our breath for that.

Samsung has also mentioned that they will be launching one or two Tizen phones this year. Our guess is that they will be low-end or mid-range devices, since Samsung has already got the high-end covered with Android and Windows Phone devices. Hopefully we will find out more at MWC this year.

RIP Bada then... Sad
Too bad imo... the worst scenario I was thinking of is that bada will merge with Android. At least I hope that Sammy will release Bada2 for the rest of us, before it will go down the drain.

We don't know for sure if this is good or bad news . If Bada is relegated to the proverbial rubbish bin then there are only 2 scenarios as far as I can see .

Bada 2.0 being the final update we get ever.

                OR

Bada/Tizen hybrid being our future updates

LOL I hope they don't call it Boizen , sounds like a shitty boy band Wink

It's a possibility that we may see Intel processors in future wave handsets. I hope the name bada does not die coz tizen name sucks.

Whatever they do I want an exceptional mobile OS so that I do not have to go with (android / IOS / Blackberry).

Neither my BB, or my Nexus S come close to the Bada OS for user friendliness, or native abilities.

The iPhone is just too locked-down for my tastes, and will not buy one.

Tizen is a failed product like Meego of Nokia. Further, BADA users neither likely to get an upgrade nor error free BADA-TISEN software at least next few years. In short, Samsung  killed their otherwise good native OS. Samsung should learn some lessons from Apple and Blackberry before making big claims.

I don't know why but i feel a bit better reading this:

Samsung will merge its home-grown bada OS with Tizen OS, an executive has confirmed. In an interview with Forbes, Tae-Jin Kang, Senior Vice President of Samsung’s Contents Planning Team confirmed that they’ll merge both the operating systems.

Kang refrained from giving an exact timeline but said the work is “already underway” and will support backward compatibility with existing bada apps.

Samsung however, is yet to decide on how much the bada OS will be integrated with Tizen. Kang said bada could power lower-end and single-core phones whereas Tizen will go for high-end devices that aren’t powered by Android or Windows Phone.

Kang also hinted on releasing a “non-phone” bada device, which could mean Samsung could come up with a bada tablet or a TV in the near future.

IMO, they should release the beta by end of third quarter and a bada 3.0 device.

But wait....check out the official site of Linux's MeeGo....basically its mentioned that MeeGo users will be getting Tizen as their future update....and if u check out the release videos of Tizen Larkspur....it can be easily noticed that Tizen consists of traits of both Bada and MeeGo....in UI as well as features.... Though....all we can do is hope....plus....samsung wave is not anymore listed for software updates on samsung kies.

It's no secret that Samsung has for a long time planned to phase out its homegrown smartphone platform, Bada, and replace it with Tizen. While many of us hoped to see the first Tizen-running phone from Samsung this year, it seems like Samsung is going to be a bit too busy for that.

Instead, for the remainder of 2012, Samsung will be focusing on the development of Android devices, as well as on smartphones running Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 8.

Tizen developers have blamed the slow progress on lack of development tools and poor software upgrades.

Either way, with Tizen on the (slightly more distant) horizon, it's probably a safe bet that we won't see any more Bada phones.

To check out a preview of Tizen on a developer device, go here.
